Michael Hillegas, who became the first Treasurer of the United States, sold high quality musical instruments, music supplies and sheet music from his home on Second Street in Philadelphia. Hillegas’ catalogue included fascinating cello repertoire by Giacobbe Cervetto, Salvatore Lanzetti, and Johann Zewalt Triemer among others. These imaginative cellist/composers, though little known today, set the foundations of virtuoso cello technique. Come hear what Philadelphia cellists played at home in 1764!
